It’s hard to believe that it’s already been 10 months since I became the Social Media Manager at Carnival Cruise Lines. This year has gone by faster than any other I can remember, and it’s also been one of, if not, the most memorable.
I’ve experienced so many new things (visiting Europe for the first time being my absolute favorite), have had the privilege of working with and learning from so many smart and talented people on an every day basis, and most of all I’ve continued to challenge myself like never before.
Throughout all of these new experiences, I’ve learned a lot about business, life, and everything in between. I’m hoping to share a lot of these “lessons” throughout future blog posts, but for now, here are 10 I’ve learned (and some re-learned) over the last 10 months (in no particular order):
- If you want something bad enough, fight for it. But you better be sure the juice is worth the squeeze.
- Positivity is contagious. Negativity is deadly.
- Bacon goes good with everything, especially dessert.
- Learn to trust your gut… 99.9% of the time it’s right.
- NEVER SETTLE.
- If you want to be successful, prioritization in KEY.
- Talk is cheap and promises are just words. Don’t believe anything until it’s done.
- Life is way too short to hold a grudge. People make mistakes. While it may be hard to forget, learn to forgive. You’ll be surprised at how much better it will make you feel.
- It’s important to disconnect from time to time and spend quality time with those you love. You’re work isn’t going anywhere, but the people close to you might, if you always put them second.
- No matter what, always be yourself. People can spot a fake in a second (this applies to businesses/brands too).

Excellent advice. Keep doing what your doing and keep up the great work!
Thanks for the kind words and support Allison
Well said. These are all important things to keep in mind throughout our lives. I would also add:
Never underestimate the power of relationships. They are more important today than ever before.
Great post.
Great addition. Thanks for sharing Adam.
Hey Eric,
Great to see a post from you in the RSS… And already over the last 10 months everything I have seen from you at carnival has been really great man, you are really kicking ass!
In getting some niche businesses up and running this year I have crossed a LOT of enlightened lessons, some you listed for sure! 6, 7, and 9 especially
I also really had to learn patients…. When I am working an idea out for my business in my head, it can be real easy to feel anxious and EVERYTHING done for it…. But like you said, your business is not going anywhere… Deadlines are important, but life is a marathon not a spring. Some days I work a TON, some days I SURF a TON… But most importantly, every week, there is another milestone reached!!!
Let’s catch up soon man, I think I’ll be in SoFla end of September…
Surfs up,
p.s. What do you mean no Bacon on desert? I have seen bacon on doughnuts it looks amazing lol

Thank Sal and I totally agree. Patience is key when building and growing your business. Building something great can take time, it’s how you handle the ups and downs that will impact it’s ultimate success.
And read #4 again… there’s no bigger fan of bacon dessert than me
Just bookmarked!! E. Schecter = Social Media Guru
Eric, I have to say that I absolutely loved your list above. Great list for anyone, but I am passing it on to my three sons, two of whom are IT guys (btw). You do a marvelous job for Carnival and I know John H appreciates you more than any of us. John’s blog, FB page and the new “Breezie” stuff must keep you really busy! But, those of us who love Carnival but can’t always be on a ship, thank you for keeping us in the cruising mindset. I have Carnival #17 coming up in Dec. on the Miracle! Take care and thanks for all you do.
Thanks Linda! Have a great time on #17!
Will we also be seeing you on BC5?
Well, that’s a good question. We have so many ports here in Florida and trying to talk hubby into going to Galveston is not going well. We cruised with John on the Liberty this past Feb. or March, don’t remember exactly. We had a great time chatting with him. Anyway, we’ll see if I can talk him into it. We are booked on the 11/24/12 Breeze so that is a cruise we are really looking forward to!
All ten are fantastic & so important to remember. I’d add “speak up for yourself when necessary.”
All the best,
